Building and testing for multiple platforms

When I graduated from Hull, I set myself a target that I would open source my project by Christmas. At the time I was ready to release the first chunk as a python package and did so here. I should note to anyone else who’s at university and thinking of open sourcing their projects that in general, you should ask your university first because technically, they own the project.

Making a shopping list when you're a lazy programmer

I’m a big fan of cooking. For me, it’s super relaxing to just spend some time prepping, cooking, splitting the cooking wine between your pan and your glass (heheh), listening to some music and finally, eating what you’ve created.

Platformio review

I’ve embarked on a new project recently, as part of a crew of other faces you’d probably recognise. Personally my job at mo is to write wrapper libraries for the hardware. I’ve done some before, but small ones, whereas this one I had several to write so it meant I wanted to find a good tool for the job. When I started, I was literally writing the code in atom, opening up arduino, writing a sketch, installing then importing the library, running it, finding a bug and running the whole process again. I quickly got sick of it. I went on a hunt via twitter for better tools.

How did YOU end up in technology?

I started a new thing at a family party last weekend. I asked all my family what they do for a living, why they do it and how they got there, or else what they used to do before retirement. Why? I like hearing about people’s decisions, and whilst that kind of thing didn’t bother me 5 or 6 years ago, I’m at that point in my life where it’s useful to know what pathways and decisions people have made. Having made the mistake at A level of not taking Maths when I was going to be a CompSci and finding out from my dad as I started sixth form that it was “impossible to do good CompSci without maths*” meant I realise now how important it is to get all the information you can about life, the universe and everything, and that’s something you can only really gain by asking people questions like this.

Girls can code.

This week BBC Three started a new series with the above title. I got sent the advert for it the other week and thought “OH DEAR GOD LORD PLEASE NO DON’T DO THIS”, because when you open a program about tech with a girl saying “I think tech is rubbish”, the rest of it really doesn’t seem to have that much going for it.
